Best of the day: Sunday's Delicatessen sandwiches in Ybor City

Crystal hot sauce and white rice alone, I recently learned, aren't enough to slake my hunger on a busy day. By mid-afternoon, it was apparent that I needed to eat something substantial soon.

Creative Loafing's offices are located in Ybor City, so we've cycled through the many options this fine historic venue has to offer. Barbecue buffet at New World Brewery, Cuban sandwiches from Carmines, Mediterranean from Row Boat, salad and sandwiches at the Bricks. But when it comes down to the wire, when it's one of those days, I call Sunday's Delicatessen for a sandwich and chips.

Owner and chef David Sunday bakes the bread fresh everyday. Roast beef, corned beef, and roast pork are all made in-house. And the rest of the deli meat and cheese selection is Boar's Head Brand. With help from girlfriend Gina Sgambato, Sunday's prepares cold salads (deli style), and fry up fresh potato chips.

A half sandwich, like the American picture above, leaves my appetite satisfied with leftovers. And for just $6.50, you won't find anything else like it.
