We women are taught to hold our head up high, to love ourselves and be comfortable in the skin we’re in. Unfortunately, those beliefs are often challenged by the images and expectations that bombard us, brainwashing into “should-ing all over ourselves,” as Stuart Smalley would say. So how ironic is it that’s there’s a dance show full of a lithe, fit, attractive dancers who turn that all of society’s hoo-ha about women and beauty on its ear?
[jump]See such beautiful satire in action at a performance of Jane Comfort and Company: Beauty, which expores notions of female attractiveness through kinetically charged vignettes, offering a wide gamut of moods. Hillsborough Community College’s Dance Program will present talkbacks and other events in conjunction with the shows offered by the acclaimed dance troupe. Today, Jan. 13, at 6:30 p.m., hear Grace Terry, MSW, speak on topics explored at HCC-Ybor's Mainstage Theatre at 6:30. Tomorrow, Jan. 14, attend a poetry slam on the subject of “What is Beauty,” also at Mainstage Theatre, 4-5:30 p.m. On Wed., Jan. 15, Community Master Classes by Jane Comfort will be offered 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the HCC-Ybor Dance Studio, and on Thu., Jan. 16, a panel discussion on “What is Beauty” will convene in the Dance Studio 6:30-8:30 p.m.
