Academy Award nominations announced

The nominees for the 86th annual Academy Awards were announced this morning, with favorites American Hustle and Gravity each scoring 10 nominations, and 12 Years A Slave following close behind with nine. No big surprise there.

There were, however, some notable snubs — the most obvious being the lack of love shown toward the Coen brother's folky Inside Llewyn Davis, which eeked out a disappointing two nods, in the Best Cinematography and Best Sound Mixing categories. By comparison, Disney's awful The Lone Ranger also scored two nominations. In a world where even Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa manages to score at least one nomination (for Makeup and Hairstyling), was the Coen's flick really only worth two mentions?

I was also disappointed in the Documentary Feature category, which managed to exclude both Stories We Tell and Blackfish from the list of nominees. I loved both films, and was highly disappointed by the snub.

Also MIA from the Oscar roster were Robert Redford, once thought a lock for a Best Actor nomination for All Is Lost. (The "let's honor an oldster" sentiment seemed to shift to Bruce Dern in recent weeks.) Another actor who was overlooked was Michael B. Jordan, who won raves (including from CL's Mitch Perry) for Fruitvale Station, a movie that most-likely suffered because it came out months ago and the Academy voters have very short memories.

We all find out who wins on March 2, when ABC hosts the Oscars telecast hosted by Ellen Degeneres.
