Spend some time with iconic fairy tale heroines — portrayed with a gleefully mischievous twist — tonight at the Straz Center.
[jump]The Tampa premiere of the Orlando Fringe Festival hit musical Disenchanted! gives us the fairest of them from storybook land, offering delicious comedy satire that spoofs Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Mulan, the Little Mermaid, Pocahontas and other iconic females from children's literature, Disney flicks and the department store toy section.
Michelle Knight stars as Snow White, Breanne Pickering, and the ever-hilarious Lulu Picart is Hua Mulan/Pocahontas, each of whom received critical praise during the recent Abbey Theatre production in Orlando. Co-starring are St. Petersburg’s Becca McCoy — who'll be honored at this weekend's Muse@MFA tonight and got great reviews for her role in Menopause The Musical, debuts in Tampa as Sleeping Beauty. Kali Rabaut plays Little Mermaid/Belle. Ericka Dunlap, Orlando native and former Miss Florida/Miss America 2004, is "The One Who Kissed The Frog."
In the play, the leading ladies are fed up with the exploitation they’ve endured through today’s films, books and dolls. Snow White and her disgruntled cohorts — Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Hua Mulan, the Little Mermaid and Pocahontas —are storming the castle, demanding validation for their true identities.
Opens Jan. 28 and continues 8 p.m. evenings and 2 p.m. weekend matinees, Tuesdays-Sundays through April 13. While this play might sound like a good one for you little gals, it's intended for mature audiences. Regularly priced tickets are $40. strazcenter.org.
