Live music radar: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings

Soul songstress Sharon Jones doesn't let anything get in her way: not even cancer. The fiery Augusta, Ga. native was diagnosed with the pancreatic form in 2013, which put the brakes on recording and touring while Jones underwent chemotherapy treatment.

After successfully conquering the disease, Jones and her deliciously funky support band The Dap-Kings are back in business, returning to the road with their funk/soul revival back behind newly-released fifth album Give the People What They Want, arguably the Brooklyn ensemble’s solid to date.

Jones hits town with the Dap-Kings this Thursday... more info after the jump.

On stage, the pint-sized songstress conjures up the sweaty, soul-filled intensity of legends James Brown and Otis Redding while sporting a perennial ear-to-ear smile, shiny dresses and high heels to boot. Put on your most comfortable dancing shoes and get ready to lose all your inhibitions; Sharon wouldn't have it any other way.

Hard-buzzing folk-blues songstress Valerie June brings added value to the Thursday night bill with her self-styled "organic moonshine roots music," and previous Bay area shows featuring Jones & Co. were packed-house sellouts, so make sure to score tickets early for this must-see soul dance party.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings with Valerie June, Thurs., February 20, State Theatre, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m., $26.50.
