The Internet has allowed us to stay more connected than ever, but it has also removed much of the human element from such social interactions. Tech companies are scrambling to bridge this gap—to help people connect on a physical level online. Most of the early attempts have been crude, laughable, and about as satisfying as licking a computer screen.
The Kissenger, or kiss messenger, is the latest attempt to replicate physical intimacy online. The device features rubber lips that transmit facsimiles of closed-mouth kisses. The company is currently crowd sourcing funds to get these robot lips on the market.
While the Kissenger seems innocent enough, I suspect that the adult industry will dictate which of these devices emerge as the standard, just as porn was the deciding factor in the acceptance of VHS and Blu-ray over other forms of home entertainment technology. While many couples would jump at the chance to physically connect with loved ones online, the true market for these technologies will be men seeking ways to simulate sex.
You can donate to Kissenger's current Indiegogo campaign at indiegogo.com and find out more about the Kissenger at kissengers.com.
