If you like different comedy formats, this is a good weekend for you. Traditional stand-up, ventriloquism, impressions, comedy competitions and free shows pack the schedule. Here's what's happening this week:Comedy Clubs
Christopher Titus at Tampa Improv. Titus is a prolific, unapologetic writer. No matter when you last saw him, he's got new material for you. And if you've never seen him before, expect a brash, honest — and funny — look at life from the perspective of an experienced comedian. Showtimes are Friday at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. 1600 E. Eighth Ave., Tampa. Info: improvtampa.com or 813-864-4000.
Clash of the Comics at Tampa Improv. This two-night comedy cometition features local talent battling it out on the 10th anniversary of the original Clash. A number of comedians will perform, shorter, tight sets before moving on to the finals on Thursday, which include specific topics and a roast round. It's a fun way to see locals showcase their talent in a unique format. Showtimes are Wednesday and Thursday at 8 p.m.
Nick Griffin at Side Splitters. Griffin's a true late night talk show vet. In addition to Conan and Craig Ferguson, he's done Letterman 10 times. In each case the crowd gets vintage Griffin: A semi-serious demeanor, but premises dripping in sarcasm and wit designed to keep the audience laughing. Showtimes are Thursday at 8:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., Saturday at 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. 12938 N. Dale Mabry, Tampa. Info: sidesplitterscomedy.com or 813-960-1197.
Bob DiBuono at Snappers Grill & Comedy Club. DiBuono brings a lot of energy to the stage. Plenty of voices, too: Some are impressions of famous people and others are totally original. In either case, audiences get jokes punched-up by an animated delivery. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. 36657 U.S. Highway 19 N., Palm Harbor. Info: snappersgrill.com or 727-938-2027.
Darryl Lenox at Coconuts Comedy Club (St. Pete Beach). Lenox doesn't let his visual impairment stand in the way of his stand-up. Being nearly-blind is actually part of his material, and so is a positive outlook, a likable stage presence and plenty of clever jokes. Showtimes are Wednesday-Saturday at 9:30 p.m. 6200 Gulf Blvd. at the Beachcomber Resort, St. Pete Beach. Info: coconutscomedyclubs.com or 727-360-5653.
Peter Hefty at Jack's Joint. Hefty makes regular stops to the bay area, and he brings an entourage with him: Puppets like Justin, perhaps his best-known companion. Comedy ventriloquism might not be for everybody, but if you like that kind of humor, this is the show you want to catch this week. Showtime is Saturday at 8:30 p.m. 2950 Gulf -to-Bay Blvd., Clearwater. Info: tampabaycomedy.com or 727-741-8014.
One-nighters and independent shows.
Steve Miller at 1933 Pub & Grill (free show). No, not that Steve Miller. This one is self-deprecating, witty and an established comedian in the Tampa Bay area. Fellow locals Chris Matson and Jonas Presendieu join him for a night of adult-oriented laughs. Showtime is Saturday at 9 p.m. 2245 Nursery Road in Clearwater. Info: 1933pub.com or 727-532-1972.
