Every year, the Moving Current directors review dance choreographies submitted by the most notable dancers and choreographers working in Florida. Only the very best of the top selections are given an opportunity to participate in this happening.
The NewGrounds event was born in 2002 after the Moving Current directors felt the need to enrich their community with other talented and diverse choreographers living, studying and working in Florida. Moving Current hopes the event will not only entertain but get its viewers into thinking about and engaging with the concepts and practices of contemporary dance culture.
Along with the weekend performances, participants Jennifer Salk (Seattle) and George Staib (Atlanta) will be offering a Master Class series. These classes will be held after the weekend performances on May 17 and 18th at the USF Tampa dance studios on Holly Drive.
Considering the efforts that have gone into staging the concert, NewGrounds should be thoughtful and exciting. The performances encompass a wide variety of contemporary dance styles and there is definitely something for everyone to enjoy.
The event will be held at the University of South Florida’s Theatre 2 in the Tampa campus at 3829 USF Holly Drive. There will be two performances this weekend, May 16-17 at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the box office in Theatre II (cash only) or through Ticketmasterc— $16 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.
