The second Saturday of every month gallery owners in downtown St. Petersburg extend their hours to host gallery openings, themed events, pop-ups and more. Last night’s adventure took me to a pop-up exhibit, a collaborative exhibit and a duo who aim to bring together food and art.
My first stop was at Strands of Sunshine where I got to chat with creative power couple artist Calan Ree and her fiance, artist and musician Jim Morey.
Rae was hosting a pop-up event with sculptures of mushroom friends, death rattles, as well as ceramic hanging wall art. Morey recently lost the majority of his vision, but that doesn’t stop him from making art. They jointly told me about collaborating on one-of-a-kind industrial lamps that they unveiled last night. Morey joked that he hasn’t lost a finger yet, seeking us to double check.
The next stop was Galerias Bohemia Fine Arts Gallery, where Artist Ernesto Piloto and Chef Sean blurred the lines between art and cuisine. What appeared to be the beginning stages of seeds sprouting turned out to be one of the finest desserts I have ever sampled. The level of creativity and sensorial stimulus was a perfect blend built up of ingredients of butter tart, vegetable mouse, granola, dehydrated chocolate cake, micro mint and micro pea shoots. They’re collaborating with the Culinary Arts department at the 211 Gallery at HCC Oct. 2.
My last stop was at Blue Lucy where the last evening of Bike was in full spin. The show featured the theme of the biking culture. There is not much that beats the simple pleasure of riding a bicycle and each artist captured that in their piece.
