Celebrate diversity in the LGBT community this weekend with the best in world cinema.
Sarasota’s Fabulous Independent Film Festival takes place Friday, Aug. 22 through Sunday, Aug. 24 at Burns Court Cinemas. This three-day film fest is organized by broken rules productions in association with the Harvey Milk Festival, a non-profit organization.
This year’s event includes nine feature-length films: Appropriate Behavior, Blackbird, Born to Fly, Boy Meets Girl, The Circle, Cupcakes, Queerituality, To Be Takei and The Way He Looks.
The festival kicks off Friday night with the Florida premiere of Blackbird, an adaptation of Larry Duplechan’s novel of the same name and starring Mo’Nique and Isaiah Washington.
The coming-of-age film follows Randy, a choirboy, who is cast in a non-traditional production of Romeo and Juliet along with potential love interest, Marshall, while struggling to reconcile with his long-absent father.
Tickets are $8.50; opening and closing night films are $10. Tickets can be purchased online or at Burns Court Cinemas during the festival.
