Artists, musicians, hipsters, hippies and holistic eaters alike all know about Cephas' Hot Shop, the Caribbean cuisine hotspot a few blocks off Ybor City's Seventh Avenue sprawl. Owner Cephas Gilbert has been an Ybor staple for more than three decades, and the man himself is famous not only as a breathing encyclopedia of rare and healthy eats (ever try one of his aloe shakes?), but also as an altruist who's fed more than one guest who couldn't afford a meal.
Gilbert has been forced to shut down for operating without a food-service license. He admits it's true; the license reportedly lapsed five years ago, and he needs to make approximately $15K in repairs and upgrades to his kitchen — which was nearly gutted in a fire eight years ago — before he can renew it.
In true local-scene tradition, Ybor club owners and promoters have rallied a killer slate of island-hued local bands in record time for the Cephas' Hot Shop Benefit Concert, to be held this Thurs., Sept. 11 (tonight) at Crowbar. If you can't make the gig, you can always donate here.
