Most 8th grade boys spend their hours counting all the new armpit hairs that've sprouted through the day. Not the case with Malcom Brickhouse, Jarad Dawkins, and Alex Atkins.

The Brooklyn-based trio make up the metal band Unlocking The Truth. Earlier this year, the boys signed a $1.7 million recording contract with Sony. They played Coachella's main stage in April, and on Tuesday they appeared on The Colbert Report. The boys, not one of them over the age of 13, showed up, naturally, in support of a new EP, Free As You Want To Be. Because the press cycle takes precedence over geometry homework (via CoS).

The boys — who've also opened for Queens Of The Stone Age —talked about the post-womb origins of their band and touched on their time busking in Times Square ("invading Elmo's territory…," quipped Colbert). Their naivety revealed a little bit of itself in the short interview, and while puberty will add some depth to Brickhouse's vocals on "Monster" and "Free As You Want To Be," Unlocking The Truth's chops sound pretty polished to us.

Watch them play better than 90 percent of the metal bands you've seen in your lifetime below. Pre-order the EP here.
