This Week @ The Movies: 2 Guns, The Attack, Jaws, Amerikan Holokaust and more …

It's going to be a busy weekend film fans, as a number of new movies arrive in the Bay area including a big star vehicle, venerated classic, locally produced gorefest, and critically acclaimed foreign import. Apparently, there are Smurfs as well.

The big stars show up in 2 Guns, this week's entry into the summer blockbuster sweepstakes. 2 Guns stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg as a DEA agent and special forces vet working undercover as bank robbers. CL Intern Davis Johnson reviewed 2 Guns and loved it, saying "Every scene seems to captivate the audience — whether it be a high-octane car chase, a chaotic shoot out, or just the hilarity of Mark and Denzel sitting in a diner discussing bank robbery and the quality of the donuts."

Speaking of Johnson, also check out his print piece (now online) detailing the way Hollywood actors get paid. In it, Robert Downey Jr. makes one amazing point.

The Tampa Theatre has two must-sees this weekend, starting with Lebanese import The Attack, which opens today. The story of an Arab doctor living in Tel Aviv, Israel, whose wife blows up a cafe in a suicide attack, destroying his life in the process and sending the doctor into the Palestinian territories in search of the truth. I'd love to tell you I've already seen The Attack, but I'm hoping to catch it this weekend right along with you. (The New York Times loved it, if that's any motivation.)

Also playing at Tampa Theatre this weekend is Steven Spielberg's classic Jaws (Sun., Aug. 4, 3 p.m.). One of my all-time favorite movies and the original summer blockbuster, Jaws still has plenty of bite 38 years after its initial release. If you've never seen it on the big screen, you owe it to yourself to check out Jaws this weekend. Unlike past years, where the films screened as part of the Summer Classics series looked and sounded every bit their age thanks to well worn 35 mm prints, you can bet that Jaws will feature the same amazing picture and sound now blowing audiences away weekly at the Tampa landmark — all thanks to a costly conversion to digital projection and sound the Theatre completed earlier this year. I can already hear that crystal clear theme music … da dum … da dum …

Another one-night only event is the screening of Amerikan Holokaust at the Tampa Pitcher Show tonight, Fri. Aug. 2, at 10 p.m. Locally produced and shot in Pinellas County, Holokaust is the brainchild of producer John Miller and director Chris Woods, CL favorites for years whose Spaventare, White Lie and Taste Me have all screened at past installments of our Reel Terror Film Festival. (You can see all three of those flicks here.) This is Woods' first feature-length film, and tonight is the world premiere, so this is your chance to support a local filmmaker with his own unique vision. I have yet to see the flick, but it got a good review from Horror Society writer Scott Hall, who wrote, "Dark, unpleasant, and downright nasty, this is not a film for everyone … but if you’re willing to be challenged and possibly offended, check out Amerikan Holokaust." Sounds killer.

Speaking of Reel Terror, the CL staff is deeply engrossed in planning this year's event and we're hoping to blow our past events completely out of the water. Details to come soon (fingers crossed on some big announcements), but for now the call for film submissions is out there and waiting for you to submit your Florida-produced horror flick. Details here at the CL Reel Terror page

And speaking of horror shows, be sure to check out Anthony Salveggi's review of The Smurfs 2.

Today's must-read film review comes (from all places) VICE: James Franco reviews Stand by Me.

That's it for this week. Get out there and see some movies! It's going to be an awesome weekend. Denzel guarantees it:
