Doing the ALS Bucket Challenge (with qualms)

According to its website, the ALS Association has received $62.5 million in donations compared to $2.4 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 23). These donations have come from existing donors and 1.2 million new donors to The Association.

Make yours truly the latest, as I was "nominated" to take the Ice Bucket Challenge by the Sierra Club's Phil Compton earlier this week. At the speed this phenomenon has been taking place in the states and indeed around the world in just the past couple of weeks, it will probably lose its cachet by Labor Day.

So anyhoo, though I do have ambivalent emotions (I mean, you're kind of an SOB if you don't accept, right?), I'm justifying it by not just making a financial contribution to ALS of $10, but also a $25 to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, since why should ALS reap all the rewards when there are so many other notable charity organizations out there? 



I'm nominating/challenging two friends from the public radio world to participate in any fashion they'd like to: National Public Radio Project's Andrew Stelzer and WUSF 89.7's interim news director Steve Newborn. What do ya' say, gents?
