Yup, Halloween is on a Friday! The DUI situation on the streets might make for a whole new horror movie this year.

5th Annual Bricks' This Ain't Guavaween Party Ybor's best low-key hipster hangout gets wild in its own special way with a free party that starts at 10 p.m.; costume contest at midnight with more than $500 in prizes and giveaways. Creature Feature

Dia de los Muertos Fiesta Each year Casa Tina adds cultural flair to the harvest/Halloween season with its Dia de Los Muertos Fiesta, an ancient tradition that celebrates the memory of deceased loved ones with their favorite foods, music and souvenirs. Sugar skulls, giant puppets and other festively macabre accoutrements add to the fun. “Incense and bold colors are used to invoke the spirits to come visit for a few days and partake in the festivities being held in their honor,” says Casa Tina proprietor Tina Marie Avila (featured in this week’s As the Locals profile at the back this week’s issue). Her restaurant commemorates the holiday with folkloric dance, traditional food and drink, ofrendas (tribute altars) throughout the downtown, and a candlelight procession. New this year: the Casa Tina Wearable Day of the Dead Fashion Show. Ofrendas on display through Nov. 2.; Fiesta in the Park is 1-11 p.m. Sat. The Gallery of Mortality If haunted houses leave you cold but you love playing with the idea of death — and you don’t mind haunting images that stay with you for a few nights — the Gallery of Mortality at Gulfport’s City of Imagination is the place to go. Once there, you’ll be immersed in the visuals of Master of Mortality Dean Wick, who has created interpretations of death as portrayed by the master of macabre, Edgar Allen Poe. Walk through The Gallery at your own pace any night between now and Oct. 25, when it moves to the Studio @620, also featuring live performances. $9. Grand Central District Association's Pub & Grub Crawl Take a creepy-crawly trolley ride to 11 Grand Central District establishments for an evening of Halloween-filled fun, with drink and food specials at every stop. Butler's Key West Bar, Urban Brew and BBQ, The Garage on Central, Community Cafe and Sly Bar are among the participating bizes. A $5 wristband, which functions as your ticket, may be purchased at the Grand Central District Association's office at 2227 Central Ave., where the trolley will launch. Ghost Stories & Spooky Tales: A Storytelling Event Enjoy some beer from Barley Mow while local storytellers and writers share some bone-chilling tales to get you in the mood for Halloween. Storytellers include Ross Tarr, Deborah Frethem, Billie Noakes and Nicholas Richard Wilde. Scheduled: a story by famed local author Christopher Buehlman, read by a surprise local actor. Guavaween Freakshow carnival and voodoo magic come together for this year’s Guavaween festival. There will be plenty of entertainment including live music on the main stage, burlesque and side show acts in the theatre, street performers and more. Guavaween will also have a Street Festival with games, food vendors and thousands of people dressed in costumes. Gypsy Halloween Show Join a night of spooky comedy, live entertainment and food at Grimaldi’s Pizza in Citrus Park Mall. There will be Halloween based songs, improv, scary scene and movie quote trivia, as well as dancing. Hellaween Haunted Art House Bloom Art Center will host a haunted art show, just in time for Halloween. Visitors can view horror themed art pieces, explore the Haunted Warehouse filled with “intense scare installations” and listen to live entertainment. Some artists featured in this gallery are, Bruce Norris, STOIC, James Oleson and Van Der Luc. Spooky Empire Ultimate Horror Weekend Two weekends long, it’s the largest horror conventions in the nation. Top Chef Pumpkin Fight Experience the mad skills of chefs from some the region's tastiest restaurants during a different kind of kitchen battle: a pumpkin carving contest. The inaugural Top Chef Pumpkin Fight lets eaters vote for their favorite works of punkin art, which will be displayed in the Epicurean Hotel lobby starting Tuesday, Oct. 28. Chefs from Bella’s Italian Cafe, Haven (formerly SideBern's), Pearl in the Grove, Z Grille, Rooster & the Till and eight other eateries will be showcased. A donation with each vote is encouraged since the proceeds will benefit Feeding America Tampa Bay. Voting ends at midnight Friday, Oct. 31, and the winner will be announced Monday, Nov. 3. Fantasma Fest: Zombie Crawl Fantasma Fest is Ybor’s annual Halloween celebration presented by the Ybor Merchants Association. See website for individual day’s events and times. A Haunting At The Meteor Head to Ybor's original black box for spooky, creepy, theatrical fun, Halloween experience with an original musical number written by Colleen Cherry and Andy Gray. A cast of six accomplished actors will perform original plays written by Tampa playwrights, such as April Bender, Lil Barcaski and Joe Winskye. Should be a hauntingly good time. Seating is limited. Dracula, The Vampire Strikes Back Join Dracula in London as he searches for keys to Vlad the Impaler’s treasure, while Sapphi the vampire hunter searches for him. Coco Van Helsing and Lucy Lastic are also on his trail. Hilarity is sure to ensue when they all meet in Transylvania. This play features British Panto, which uses stock characters, drag comedy, puns, musical numbers and audience participation to heighten the excitement. Visitors are encouraged to dress in costume. Vampire Lesbians of Sodom Jobsite takes on Charles Busch’s tale of two blood-sucking, female-loving vampires, whose rivalry travels from Biblical times to ’80s Vegas. Sure to be a hoot. The War of the Worlds MAS Community Theatre will perform a live staged re-creation of the radio broadcast on Sunday, Oct. 30, 1938, when millions of radio listeners were shocked by radio news alerts that announced the arrival of Martians. Though what the radio listeners heard was a portion of Orson Welles’ adaptation of the well-known book, War of the Worlds by H. G. Halloween Horror Nights 24
Universal Studios will feature all-new haunted houses, chilling street experiences and live shows. This year’s fright includes experiences with The Walking Dead, AVP: Alien Vs. Predator and The Purge: Anarchy. We don’t think you’ll leave the award-winning Halloween Horror Nights without knowing the true meaning of scared. Hellview CemeteryThe free local haunted attraction is inspired by the disappearance of Madame Oar, who leaves the power balance in shambles as a new power grows inside Hellview’s walls. Howl-O-ScreamThis year’s theme, Cursed, is taking victims. Bring a friend with you to the fright night, and you might have a chance of surviving the creatures in the shadows. Radley Haunted House: Dr. Radley’s Nightmare Machine Owner Cody Meacham continues his ongoing investigation into the cursed Radley family and features some elaborate performances — such as Rose’s creature character tormenting Dr. Radley, portrayed with eccentric insanity by Justin Horn. Proceeds go to the Cancer Research Institute. $5. Tasco Field of Screams Returning for its ninth Halloween, the Carnival of Chaos invites the Bay area to explore its intense scare zones. Voted the No. 1 Scare in Tampa, this event challenges visitors to escape the Fun House, the dark woods, the Big Top, Midway and the “No Way Out” maze. Participants will encounter darkness, loud noises, bright lights and wooded trails. This event is not suitable for young children, parents are advised. $10 for 18 and under, $15 for 19 and older. Kid-Friendly Fun

Brick-Or-Treat Gets junior’s freak on with activities and themed treat stations with candy, snacks and surprises along the way. Entertainment includes a Lego Super Brick Ghost Build, Lego Scary Scavenger Hunt (win prizes), Brick-or-Treat Trail and Emmet’s Everything is Awesome Costume Contest. Fantasma Fest: Little Monsters Pumpkin Patch A family-friendly event where kids can choose a free pumpkin to decorate from the more than 750-1,000 pumpkins in a fenced pumpkin patch in the Centro Ybor courtyard. From 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. kids can then show off their costumes while trick-or-treating among the Centro Ybor merchants. Free. Thrill the World A fun and free event for all-ages. The idea is a worldwide flash mob to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. ZooBoo Come creep around the largest family Halloween event in Tampa. Expect more fun frights, haunted houses, night rides and more. The attractions will vary in “scare factor,” so everyone will have goosebumps. A Nightmare on Franklin Street Tampa Tampa Theatre’s annual horror-gasm is upon us with scary and frightfully funny and camp favorites. On Fri., Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m., see a shaky home-video production of a haunting at home in Paranormal Activity. The Director Spotlight Double Feature Series: Tim Burton The Capitol Theatre kicks-off The Director Spotlight Double Feature Series with two Tim Burton films.
