Here’s what’s behind the curtain this week in Tampa Bay theatre...

THIS IS SO NOT YOUR FATHER’S VAMPIRE LESBIANS PLAY: According to director David M. Jenkins, Jobsite Theater’s Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, which starts previews a week from tonight, will feature “priapic guard spears” tipped with sex toys left behind by a different company’s production of The Rocky Horror Show. Jenkins adds that last Sunday, a male cast member was fitted for falsies, and two female castmates were fitted for chest bindings so they could play men. And as SCENE BREAKER reported three weeks ago, the live music for the production will feature an accordion. To sum up: dildos on poles, fake breasts, fake anti-breasts, accordion. That’s what we know.

THEY’RE WORLD-FAMOUS IN TAMPA BAY: The actress playing Cinderella in freeFall Theatre’s Sondheim-go-roundInto the Woods ordered at Starbucks the other day, and her cup came back marked “Cinderella” by the barista who had recognized her. The actor who played T.R. inThe Apocrypha of Theodore Roosevelt at Tampa Rep over the last two weeks stepped onto his Seminole Heights porch Monday to pick up his mail, and got a thumbs-up from his mailman, who had happened to see the show.

GOING ONCE… TWICE… SOLD TO THE MAN WHO LIKES MAKING FUNNY NOISES! During its “Scary Stories” broadcast this Monday night from theStudio@620, theWMNF Radio Theatre Project will auction off chances to get behind the mic. On the block at the season six fundraising performance are: 1) A speaking role in the continuing “Noel Berlin: Cabaret Detective” series, 2) A gig assisting the Foley artist with live sound effects, and 3) An on-air product placement of the winning bidder’s choice edited into the Noel Berlin script.

“ART” VS. “DAY JOB” IS A FALSE DICHOTOMY: The Arts Council of Hillsborough County and Community Stepping Stones are teaming up late Monday afternoon to host aJob Fair for Teaching Artists. Performers and instructors working in visual art, dance, drama and music are being invited to schmooze with representatives from local organizations that hire teaching artists, including thePatel Conservatory, theTampa Museum of Art and theCarrollwood Cultural Center.

NOT THE RAZZIES: Tampa’s peripatetic sketch comedy troupeSome Sort of Show will present a tongue-in-cheek theater awards ceremony on Nov. 10 at Tampa Preparatory School. As this is the very first year for "The Some Sort of Theater Awards," no one other than SSOS is entirely sure what the night holds. But the smart money says the group will be poking a little fun at local theater artists, many of whom have already agreed to show up and get poked. The event is open to the public.
